In 1870, Mr. Zalmon Simmons, the founder, together with nine employees started to manufacture steel wire beds in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
In 1900, James Marshall patented a wrapped coil spring.
Each coil was manually made, driving up time and labor costs such that Simmons mattresses could only be found on luxury liners like the Titanic and Queen Mary.
In 1925, John Franklin Gail, Simmons’ top engineer, designed a machine that was able to coil wire and insert it into fabric sleeves quickly and independently, hence making Beautyrest mattresses affordable for the masses.
Simmons was an early proponent of celebrity endorsements to promote its products and by association, a Simmons® mattress.
Eleanor Roosevelt, the first lady of the United States was featured in a Simmons advertisement in 1927. Several testimonials from luminaries such as George Bernard Shaw, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison were also featured in subsequent advertisements.
In 1958, Simmons was the first brand to introduce King & Queen size mattresses.
The development of theses mattresses was the result of research showing that Americans were becoming both broader and taller people than they once were.
In 1995, Simmons launched its most successful advertisement, the “Bowling Ball Test” advertisement, which showcased the renowned Do-not-Disturb® benefit.
Simmons was the Official Bedding Supplier of the 1996 Centennial Summer Olympics, Atlanta, home of Simmons.
With a commitment to innovation, Simmons was the first in the industry to launch the Non-flip mattress in 2001, bringing convenience to consumers and hoteliers.
Another Simmons breakthrough was the launch of e-ION Crystal™ technology, first added to BackCare mattress series in 2002 and later on to Beautyrest models.
The e-ION Crystals emit negative ions bringing sleep benefits and boosting immunity.
In 2005, Simmons Advanced Pocketed Coil was introduced.
